This absolutely happened to my husband in Honfleur. He walked down to the boulangerie to buy un croissant and une baguette and deux pain au chocolat, the femme behind the counter actually yelled at him when he ordered une croissant. He made his purchase and went to another boulangerie for the rest of the time we were there. She probably didn’t care but he was very hurt by the experience and embarassed as he really doesn’t speak French. Instead of turning him off the language he came home with a drive to learn more French so that doesn’t happen again!
