What to Pack for Paris in Fall

I can confidently say that fall is my favorite time of the year, and if you’re spending it in Paris, well, it will quickly become your favorite time of the year too! If you’re planning to visit the City of Light and want to look just as chic and sophisticated as the French, then use this post as your official guide for what to pack for Paris in the fall.

What to Wear in Paris in the Fall

As the leaves turn golden and the air crisps with the onset of fall, Paris transforms into a picturesque wonderland, offering a perfect backdrop for embracing seasonal fashion.

And while fall fashion tends to be glamorous in most major cities around the world, I think the French do one of the best jobs of showcasing it.

Burgundy leather handbags, chocolate brown boots, camel-colored wool coats…ah, these are a few of my favorite things!

If you’re packing for Paris in the fall, you can rest assured that it will be cool enough for you to pack all of those aforementioned items. The same can’t always be said for spring or summer, where weather tends to be a bit more finicky.

That said, packing for Paris in autumn isn’t just about staying warm; it’s about channeling the city’s timeless elegance and sartorial flair. Here’s your guide to curating a chic and stylish wardrobe that captures the essence of Parisian fashion during this magical season.

Chic and Cozy Outerwear

Start with a statement outer layer that exudes sophistication and warmth. Opt for a camel colored coat, a quintessential piece that effortlessly elevates any outfit.

Its neutral tone pairs beautifully with the autumn palette of Parisian streets and provides a polished look whether you’re exploring Montmartre or sipping a café crème in the Rive Gauche.

If you’re going to Paris in the beginning of fall, look for a lighter piece of outerwear like a trench coat, leather jacket or sweater coat. If you’re heading to Paris in the second half of fall, consider a wool coat or a wool blend for more warmth.

Boots Made for Walking

No Parisian adventure is complete without the perfect pair of boots. Embrace the season with chocolate brown leather boots that offer both comfort and style.

Whether ankle-high or knee-high, boots tend to be versatile enough to transition from day to evening, adding a touch of rustic charm to your ensemble as you stroll along the Seine.

If you’re going to Paris in late September or early October, you probably won’t need the knee-high boots. But if you’re going towards the end of October, November, or beginning of December, pack the knee-high boots.

Most importantly, consider packing boots with low heels or small block heels, and ensure they’re waterproof (or at least won’t be destroyed by rain…aka no suede!).

And, like always, it’s important to pack a pair of stylish sneakers! These can be worn for transit days at the airport, as well as around the city when you’ve got those days with extra steps included in your itinerary (think, visiting the museum!).

Rich Hues and Textures

Incorporate the colors of fall into your wardrobe with rich, deep hues and luxurious textures.

A burgundy handbag adds a pop of color and sophistication, complementing the season’s palette of amber, russet, and forest green.

Look for structured designs or soft leather finishes that embody Parisian chic. I also always recommend a crossbody option when it comes to handbags, no matter what the season, as it’s safest and easiest to wear in the city.

Sweaters and Scarves

Layering is key to navigating Parisian weather in the fall. Pack lightweight cashmere sweaters in soft neutrals or muted tones like olive green or charcoal gray. You’ll also want to pack more basic, light layers that you probably already own like a white button down and some long sleeve tees.

These pieces can be effortlessly paired with tailored trousers or dark denim for a look that’s classic and refined.

Don’t forget to accessorize with a wool or cashmere scarf in a timeless pattern or solid color. This versatile accessory not only keeps you warm on brisk mornings but also adds a touch of Parisian flair to your ensemble.

You’ll also want to pack a belt or two, as it’s the perfect way to accessorize simple pieces, like a pair of jeans with a white, long-sleeve tee. It’s a great way to be able to pack wardrobe staples you already have in your closet, but dress them up for a trip to the City of Light.

Dresses and Trousers

For daytime explorations or evening outings, consider packing midi dresses in gem tones, muted prints, leopard, or in a knit fabric that evoke the cozy romance of autumn. Pair them with opaque tights and boots for a look that’s both feminine and practical.

Alternatively, opt for tailored trousers in fabrics like tweed or corduroy, which offer comfort and style in equal measure. Team them with a crisp blouse or a fitted sweater for a polished silhouette that transitions seamlessly from day to night.

Remember, denim is totally fine in Paris, but just try to avoid jeans that have a ton of holes or tears in them. A dark wash pair or black jeans often tend to be the easiest clothing to wear when you’re on vacation in Paris because you can easily go from day to night in them.

Final Touches

Complete your Parisian fall wardrobe with a few essential accessories:

Leather gloves (late fall): Choose a pair in a coordinating shade such as cognac or deep plum, perfect for keeping your hands warm while exuding elegance.

Statement jewelry: Opt for delicate pieces or bold designs that complement your outfit without overwhelming it. Think a pair of gold drop earrings or a chunky link necklace.

Fall-perfect lips and nails: This is the perfect time to also wear some red or brown lipstick shades. You can lighten it up if you’re not comfortable wearing darker shades by running a neutral lipstick or balm over the shade to tone it down. While you’re at it, don’t forget a fall manicure (here are some autumn nail polish ideas).

  1. What a well chosen collection of fall clothing…and I have many similar pieces…so that’s fun. I was in Paris again, in early spring, when it was quite unpredictable weatherwise. ☔️ My Brooks Brothers trench was frequently required. I agree about stylish and comfortable sneakers, and my older feet were relieved. I have a wool wrap coat , cashmere pullovers, and moto jacket, as well as a soft leopard scarf . I wonder if you’ve been in my 74 year old brain, Beeta !
