This recipe for yogurt with a berry compote is one my favorite foods to enjoy as a healthy snack between lunch and dinner. Naturally sweet and made with local California dairy and fresh strawberries, this snack is so good, it tastes like dessert!
One of the principles I try to follow from the French diet is to be mindful about the ingredients I use, avoiding processed foods and, instead, relying on fresh, local products. That’s why I was excited to partner with Real California Milk and highlight exactly what their seal is all about.

What’s the point of attempting a healthy snack if the main ingredient in your snack isn’t farm-fresh or isn’t a quality product? For this particular recipe, I usually look for plain yogurt with the Real California Milk seal on it.
I then create a simple berry compote to add to the yogurt. While you’ve probably enjoyed yogurt with fruit, I recommend trying yogurt with a fresh berry sauce like this.
The reason I prefer a berry compote over just simply adding fruit to yogurt is because the sauce is a natural sweetener for the yogurt and seeps into every bite. I avoid buying yogurt that’s high in sugar and instead opt for plain yogurt that’s slightly tart.
When you make a no sugar berry compote like this, all you’re doing is cooking the berries with a splash of orange juice until they’re softened and thick. Once the berry compote is cool, you pour the compote over the yogurt for a naturally sweet garnish.
For an extra healthy boost, I like to add a bit of chia seeds to the compote, which is also a way to thicken the fruit sauce without cornstarch or other traditional thickeners.
As a finishing touch, I’ll usually add some shaved almonds and coconut chips for an equally healthy, tasty bit of crunch. I love that the entire snack is wholesome and made with sustainable ingredients from local California dairy farms. It feels good to support local farmers and know that I’m getting a delicious treat I can indulge in, guilt-free!
When looking for products made with the Real California Milk seal, you’ll typically find the seal placed across the top or front of the dairy product, or printed on the side of the product’s brand name. I found my Real California Milk products at Target, however, feel free to search their product locator to find the options closest to you.
- 1 cup quartered strawberries, stems removed
- 1 tbsp orange juice
- 1/2 tsp chia seeds
- 1 cup plain yogurt, to serve with
- coconut flakes, to garnish
- shaved almonds, to garnish
- Add the strawberries and orange juice to a saucepan over medium heat. Stir together, then add in the chia seeds to combine.
- Cook the strawberries until they're tender, using a wooden spoon to slightly muddle them.
- Transfer the berry compote to a small bowl and allow the compote to cool before using.
- Scoop yogurt into a bowl or small glass and top with some berry compote. Layer a little more yogurt on top with a little more berry compote. Garnish with shaved almonds and coconut flakes.
