In France, moms are known for being calm, “chief” of the family, and always full of wisdom. While my mother is not French, she fits the bill perfectly. For as long as I can remember, my mom has been full of wonderful advice, and I think a lot of that comes from having had a life full of rich experiences. So, I thought it would be a nice idea to have my mom join us here on Mon Petit Four every Sunday to share some words of wisdom and advice for you guys, should you decide to email in any questions for her! Without further ado, here is my maman, Fariba:
I recently lost my husband of 35 years, father of my two beautiful daughters and my best friend in life. A few days ago at a family gathering, someone asked me if I ever, during these 35 years, felt disappointed in my husband.
I was quick to answer, “Never.” The person asking the question asked me to take my time and to think deep and well, reflecting upon the years or eras of my life. I repeated, “Never.”
In that moment, I thought of so many instances in which he changed my life for the better.
It started when he brought me with him to America. At the time that I came, in the early ’80’s, my home country was in political turmoil.
I had just graduated high school, and for a young woman in my situation, things looked bleak. The prospect of coming to the land of opportunity was the chance of a lifetime.
Not only was my husband a man I had fallen in love with, but also someone who was proving early on to have a positive impact on my life and instill hope within me.
Throughout our marriage, he lovingly stood by my side and helped me raise our two smart, talented, capable, and kind daughters. Just the thought of this made me think how I could ever be disappointed in a person like that.
Reflecting upon the conversation I had at the family gathering, I felt very emotional and proud about having had him in my life.
You see, it was through his strength that I found my own, and it was through his wisdom that I gained mine.
His influence is undeniable, as are the remarkable experiences I’ve had throughout my entire life.
It is my hope that by sharing these experiences here, you will feel inspired and welcomed to turn to me for advice.
